Kate specialises in designing security systems for our High Net Worth clients, bringing 25 years of experience in the industry. We caught up with her to learn more about her career, what she enjoys about her role, and her thoughts on the future of the security sector.
What’s your career history – and how does it feed into what you’re doing now?
Working in the security industry was meant to be a stop gap before I studied for my PGCE – 25 years later, I am still here!!
25 years ago, it was very rare for women to work in this industry and clients often found it quite novel meeting a female surveyor! I also found I was quizzed more than my male colleagues – fortunately, that is no longer the case, either due to more women working in the industry or being older!!
I have worked in the HNW (High Net Worth) sector for the majority of my career and thoroughly enjoy meeting new clients and the other professionals working in this area. Security is a sensitive subject, and it is important to assess the requirements for each individual client and property as they vary from one to the next.
What do you like the most about your role?
The variety of work and the clients and properties that I work with.
What are the challenges?
Finding aesthetically pleasing solutions for security that meet the Interior Designers’ expectations.
What’s your proudest achievement so far at ECS?
Having previously worked with Delfont Mackintosh Theatres with a previous employer, I was successful in securing their business for ECS.
What do you enjoy the most about working at ECS?
The freedom and trust that they give me.
What’s one thing you wish potential customers knew about ECS?
Even though we are still a fairly young company, there is a huge spread of knowledge and experience—I have worked with our MD for twenty years this year.
What has changed the most within the industry since you began working at ECS?
The wireless technology for access control systems such as SALTO has developed significantly.
What do you think the future looks like for the security and fire safety industries?
I believe there will be growth in the commercial and high net worth client markets and potentially a decline in the domestic markets as equipment becomes simpler and easier to self-install.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I love a holiday—our PM’s nickname for me is Judith (Chalmers)! I love spending time with my family, walking my dogs, theatre trips, yoga, and pilates. I am also desperately trying to reduce my golf handicap!
What’s one thing that people might be surprised to learn about you?
Many years ago, I had an antique pine business and know how to restore furniture.
